How to wear vintage: Mastering 1960s Mod
An article in the October issue of InStyle Magazine caught my eye this week. It was about 1960s mod fashion having a comeback! The article featured mod inspired pieces and the designers who designed them, encouraging readers to try the trend. Articles like this make me happy for quite a few reasons. It shows contemporary fashion fans that vintage has never really gone away, just reincarnated. It also gives me the opportunity to show you how to master the trend with the real deal! I bought this 1960s mock neck top a few weeks ago at a vintage boutique for $30. Which is a far cry from the $395 inspired option I saw in the magazine!
Tops like this are very easy to blend into your current wardrobe, it doesn't even look like it's vintage! The trick is to appreciate the era in which it came from, but not try and recreate the entire style head to toe. If I wore tights, shiny patent leather heels, and twiggy winged eyeliner you would have thought I was on the set of an Austin Powers movie. However, I approached the styling of this top very simply by wearing distressed jeans and black booties. The outfit is instantly modern but with a vintage twist, perfect for fall!
Tip no 19: Master mod pieces by keeping the supporting elements to your outfit very modern. Choose one vintage piece to wear instead of embracing the era in full!
