How to design your wedding
Inspiration & Vision
The hardest part when it comes to choosing your wedding design is getting started. Every wedding magazine, blog, and pinterest board are in your face 24/7 and it's hard to not feel super overwhelmed by all the beautiful images. I remember when we started looking for venues I already knew that I wanted an estate wedding and lots of vintage vibes for our wedding. However, I had no clue what the color scheme would be. My twin sister actually found our estate venue on pinterest (amazing right ?!) and once Matthew and I visited it we fell in love with the character, rich history, and uniqueness of it. After researching the venue's past weddings to death for inspiration, I couldn't find a wedding that we connected with. That's when I hit the wall of nothingness. I could not for the life of me figure out what color / colors I wanted.
I vividly remember turning to Matthew and asking him what he envisioned our wedding to look like. He (like most men) responded "I want it to look however you want it to look babe", LOL not helpful. So I decided to ask "what's the one color that we both really love" and we both blurted out "burgundy". Looking back, It now seems crazy that I even struggled with figuring out the colors because I'm so obsessed with how it turned out. Sometimes it's easy for brides to really nail down their inspiration and for others (like myself) it takes a little while. Once you have your main inspiration, theme, or color palette start pining away for a few weeks! Choose anything you love that fits in with your inspiration and vision!
Curate your Inspiration
After your frenzy of pinning and gathering inspiration starts to die down, start deleting pins. Yeah you read that correctly, delete pins (or save to another board if that's too hard) and only keep the ones you really love. This sounds tough but once you start curating your board you start to notice what really speaks to you and what you really can live without. Also, try to keep your budget in mind as well. While you'd really love to have centerpieces filed with rare florals, you have to honestly ask yourself is that is something you can afford?
Here are a few pins from my curated pinterest board:
So now you have a bunch of curated pins, now what? After I curated my wedding board using only the search terms "Burgundy + Estate Wedding", I started to pull out the design elements from the photos to help me further define my wedding. While looking at my board I realized that I was drawn the below elements:
- Wax seals
- Blush and Burgundy bouquets
- Gold chargers
- Gold flower vessels
- Lots of candle hurricanes
- Rectangular tables
- Simple white cake with fresh flowers
I went from only having a venue and a single color as a starting point to having all of those listed elements in the end. Believe me when I say that all of those design elements were actually used!
Now it's time to put all of that hard work into action. You have the basis of what you'd like your wedding to look like and it's time to start bringing it to life. Find vendors (florists, event rental companies, bakers, etc) that can re-create your inspiration to the best of their ability. Don't expect everything to look exactly like the photos you pinned but use those images as a helpful guideline to give to your vendors. If at this point you still feel overwhelmed, it's okay to hire a planner to help execute your vision! Professional wedding planners will swoop in and work through the details to get everything just right. I decided to execute our vision by myself. While at times I wish I was able to have a professional planner to help organize things with vendors, I'm so glad that in the end I was able to bring everything to life.
